Having blood coming out of your gums may seem normal, but if it happens frequently, then it is time for you to take action because it could be a sign of a more serious condition if left untreated for too long.

WITHOUT FURTHER ADO, HERE ARE THE COMMON CAUSES OF BLEEDING GUMS:

GINGIVITIS

If you are having bleeding gums, then it is a sign of gum inflammation, better known as gingivitis.

A common and mild form of gum disease, it is caused by buildup of plaque along the gumline, resulting in irritated, red and swollen gums that can bleed when you brush your teeth.

If left untreated, gingivitis will lead to periodontitis, resulting in damage to the tissues and bone that support your teeth in the long term.

Periodontitis inflames and infects your gums, causing them to pulling away from the roots of your teeth, resulting in loss of teeth along with bad breath, bad taste in your mouth, a change in how you bite food, and red, swollen and tender gums.

HARD BRUSHING / HARD-BRISTLED TOOTHBRUSHES

Having bleeding gums can also be a result of brushing too hard. It is especially true if you are using a firm-bristled brush to clean your teeth every day.

To avoid seeing blood when brushing your teeth, it is best to either try or switch to a medium or soft-bristled brush, especially if you have gingivitis, and consult with a dentist on your next appointment about the right toothbrush that you can use depending on your condition/s.

FLOSSING

Flossing is good, but do not keep your flossing style consistent, it could result in blood coming out of your gums. It is especially so if you either haven't flossed in days or just started flossing more frequently to help remove food and plaque in between your teeth. Luckily for you, it should clear up in about a week.

USING MEDICATIONS

Especially blood-thinning medications, which cause a decrease in your blood's ability to clot, leading to easier bleeding. They are listed by the American Dental Association as one of the possible causes of bleeding gums. If you are using blood-thinning medications, then let your dentist know about it on your next checkup.

PREGNANCY GINGIVITIS

If you are pregnant, then you might experience having swollen gums and bleeding when brushing. This is referred to by the American Pregnancy Association as pregnancy gingivitis, which is caused by hormonal changes during pregnancy that alters your body's normal response to bacteria that cause gum disease. According to the American Pregnancy Association, symptoms of pregnancy gingivitis should clear up after pregnancy, followed by a dental checkup and regular brushing and flossing to prevent your gum problems from becoming worse.

DENTURES

If you are using dentures for your teeth, then you may sometimes experience bleeding gums. It is especially true if your dentures either fit too tightly or are not of the right size.
